Natural Environment

The Ambroz Valley landscape landscape is characterized by an exuberant and splendid vegetation, particularly in some concrete zones in which chestnut trees forests, oaks and even holly trees and birches meet.

The so-called "Galician chestnut tree forest", in the area of Hervás, stands out in the same way because of its vegetation. In the end of the valley, beautiful oak woods, old cork oaks and lands plenty of irrigation meadows cover the territory. Thus, in the mountain ranges, the natural state predominant formation is basically the Aestilignosa, characterized by the presence of chestnut trees, oaks, cork oaks, with other species that make part of the thicket, such as heaths, tree strawberries, gorses, etc.

Among the existent birds in the region, there are remarkable species such as the tawny vulture, the golden eagle, the eagle owl, goshawks, kites, cranes and ornate hawk-eagles that live in the mountains of Tras la Sierra and in the scrublands so as the partridges do, while blackbirds, “rabilargos” (log-taileds) and some magpies are dispersed in all the green spaces. The Ambroz Valley is a lynx zone. Among the hunting fauna we will find hares and rabbits scattered all over the region, ones in the plains, the others in the scrub. In the thick vegetation zones, it’s possible to find wild boars and deer.

The vixen lives all over the valley and it can be easily seen. In hunting zones you can also find the so-called “wild dogs”, abandoned or lost in the hunts, which sometimes attack the cattle. Fish that we can find in this area are the river trout, the barbel, the carp, the “boga”, the “cacho”, the black-bass and the crayfish.
